Danny Madden - Facts Of Life - 12" (Re-Up) - (1990)

WEA Records YZ473T

ReUp: Originally posted by Mickey P back in 22nd May 2008.
If anyone has the CD single I'd sure appreciate a 320 rip as I don't own this one!
- Kymba

Danny Madden has worked with the Basement Boys on Ultra Naté's early work, and he was the background singer and vocal arranger on many of the Def Mix productions.

This track was produced by Danny and Carl McIntosh (Loose Ends) with some Dancin' Danny D remix activity. Is it soulful I hear you ask. Look at the cover, see how it pays homage to Marvin, with this kind of pedigree you don't need to ask, just check the acappella and stop worrying.

There was also an album 'These Are The Facts Of Life' but I never got to hear it. This track was featured in the Mario Van Peebles' movie "New Jack City". It's a beautiful thing people!

Souled Out - In My Life - (1992)

Columbia Records 657836 2

Souled-Out-In-My-Life-Cover

320 Re-Up - Originally posted by Mickey P 27/05/2008 - Kymba

1991 introduced those of us fortunate enough to be in the right place, to the wonderful vocals of Sarah Warwick singing Shine On for Souled Out. The following spring this beauty dropped and although our Sarah isn't credited, I've always assumed that she's singing In My Life too. The collective known as Souled Out (a.k.a. Sold Out) comprised of Alessandro Sommella, Domenico "GG" Canu, Ricky Rinaldi and Sergio Della Monica. You may be familiar with some of their later work on the global clubland dancefloors. Hondy (No Access) and the mighty Planetfunk (Chase The Sun) being the most well known to me.

Souled-Out-In-My-Life-OFC

The version of Shine On included here is a club mix by Joey Negro (a.k.a. Dave Lee) and although it's a credible club mix, the Andalucian Mix on my 12" is far superior IMHO. I'll post it when I come across it. Souled Out released an album 'Shine On' in 1992 which I have never been able to find.

Blackgirl - 90's Girl 1994

Kaper Records 74321-21789-2

BlackGirl consisted of Pam Copeland, Nycolia 'Tye-V' Turman and Rochelle Stuart from Atlanta. They formed in 1992 on the Kaper label and released their debut album, Treat U Right, in 1994. The single Krazy spent 15 weeks in the US Top 100, but it was its follow up that took BlackGirl into the Top 20. Produced by Teddy Riley the single 90's Girl spent 20 weeks in The Top 100 stalling at #13. The song was revamped for a Chrysler TV ad and as proof of their success, the group scored a tour with R Kelly.

Towards the end of 1994, BlackGirl earned two Billboard Music Award nominations for Top R&B Group, and Top R&B New Artist. In 1995, BlackGirl earned two Soul Train Award nominations, one for Single Of The Year for "Let's Do It Again" and Album Of The Year for Treat U Right. They then released 90's Girl in the UK, backed with Krazy and Ooh Yeah, where it reached #23 in the national chart. Their sophomore set, Evolution of BlackGirl, was finished but never released. In 1996 the group split, some of the members went on to work with the likes of Janet Jackson, Toni Braxton and Jermaine Jackson. After the break up Nycolia went on to write, or record back up vocals for Pink, Deborah Cox, Case, Toni Braxton and Will Smith.

Included in this rar is an extra Boss' Hip-Hop Extended Mix of Krazy which was taken from vinyl that I no longer have?

Will Downing & Mica Paris - Where Is The Love 1989

4th & Broadway 12 BRW 122

Mr. Downing is joined by South London's finest, Mica Paris, on this collaboration. Two brand new stars glowing bright in the celestial soul heavens, both with debut albums riding high in the album charts. What better way to get them talked about than a cover of a soul duet classic from two of the finest voices ever. Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway's 1972 Grammy winner, Where Is The Love and don't they do it justice. Add a Radio Mix of a song each and it's a value for money 12".

That ain't enough though, on this release we have another track by Mica. Same Feeling is, to my knowledge, otherwise unavailable. It's not as special as her later bonus tracks but it is good enough to warrant a place on your ipod. Play it loud and tell me you ain't dancin'.

Will Downing - Free 1988

4th & Broadway 12 BRW 112

Multi talented Will Downing released his debut album, Will Downing, in 1988. Alongside A Love Supreme, In My Dreams and a host of other superb tracks was a cover of Deniece Williams' Free. This classic was originally written by Deniece Williams, Henry 'Hank' Redd, Nathan Watts & Susaye Greene (The Supremes). It was Williams' breakthrough single, as a solo artist, hitting the Number 1 spot on the singles chart for two weeks in May 1977. It has been covered by many but few can compete with the stunning original. The most recent was by Marcus Miller for his album of the same name in 2007. Miller enlisted the the talents of Corinne Bailey Rae to provide the vocal.

Six years after Downing's performance of Free from his debut album featuring A Love Supreme, Chante Moore recorded Free for her album, A Love Supreme. Her version used an interpretation of the Commodores - Sail On but was still easily forgotten. Downing's cover is easily the most successful and stands tall alongside Deniece Williams original. Featuring additional production and remixing by Gail 'Sky' King, this is Will Downing's version. Superb!

Will Downing - In My Dreams 1988

4th & Broadway 12 BRW 104

Singer, songwriter, and producer Will Downing began his recording career in the early 1980s. The baritone Brooklyn native attended NY's Erasmus Hall High School for performing arts prior to working with Jennifer Holiday, Gerald Albright, Regina Belle, Mica Paris and many others. In 1988 Downing signed a recording contract with 4th & Broadway Records, and his debut album, Will Downing, was released that same year. The media singled out A Love Supreme, based on the John Coltrane classic jazz piece, as one of its highlights. In reality the album was virtually faultless and certainly perfect for that time.

Nova Casper - Turned On To You 1986

Bluebird Records BRT 24

  • Extended Version
  • Extended Instrumental
Back in the day, the Rare Groove scene declared this null and void coz the Eighties Ladies version was more rare. In a pigs ear, say I!

Nova Casper has the most luscious voice and Ian Morrow has done a splendid job on the sound. Written by Roy Ayers (Yes, they've spelt it wrong again?) & Edwin Birdsong, this version is an absolute killer groove.

Emma Haywoode - Don't Poison Me 1991

Boss Records BOSS 12008

  • Don't Poison Me
  • Don't Poison Me (Instrumental)
Cracking slab of vinyl from Emma Haywoode, this dropped in '91 and I never heard of her again. Back in the day, I wondered whether she was related to Haywoode, the 1985 Pop/Dance 'Roses' artist. Now in the age of the internet, it took me two clicks to find out that she is the sister of Sid (Sidney) 'Roses' Haywoode. How the times are changing. Enjoy.

This gorgeous eco-friendly groove was written and produced by Emma & Livingston Brown and published by Equinox Songs. Need Your Lovin' was the only other release by Emma, released in 1990 I've never seen or heard it?

Keni Stevens - Living On The Edge 1989

Debut Records dblp 505

Not to keen on te title track but its not a bad album. Better production than the 'Blue Moods' album despite the lack of names involved. Sheila Ferguson gets a shout out and Mike Stevens is, I believe, Keni's brother but I'm not sure whether I read that or we talked about it back in the day. Those credits are soooo, so tiny?

Paul Laurence - Strung Out 1985

Capitol Records 12CL 393

New York's Paul Laurence worked in the 80's, as a producer/songwriter with names like Melba Moore, Lillo Thomas, Meli'sa Morgan and Keith Washington. With succes came the opportunity of being a recording artist himself with this from his first 1985 Capitol Records album, Haven't You Heard, being the most well known. 'Strung Out' was absolutely huge on the South London pirate stations.

YoYo Honey - Get It On 1991

Zomba Music JIVE CD 281

Another slice of Voodoo Soul, this is one of my favourites. The first single released by YoYo Honey, a year before the album came out. A second single would be released in 1991.

The Radio Mix later became the Album Version. My personal preference is for the Perfecto Mix created by Paul Oakenfold & Steve Osbourne. The Ragga & Dub are the work of Steely & Clevie. Great band, great tune, I wonder what happened to them?
