James Ingram - It's Real 1989

WEA Records W2975CD

James Ingram is from Akron, Ohio. Like the family group Ingram, he is also a self-taught musician who plays piano, guitar, bass, drums and keyboards, as well as having an excellent voice. Additionally, he is a producer and songwriter. He began his career in the '70s as part of the band Revelation Funk and gained his reputation in the Los Angeles area as a session vocalist. His surname and six degrees of seperation seem to be the only connection with Ingram the group?

Having made the grade with his performance on Quincey Jones album and his duet with Michael McDonald on Yah Mo B There, Ingram put his voice on all the best recordings but his own solo work didn't seem to get the same recognition. In 1989, for his third album, the production skills of Gene Griffin were used, with remixes by Teddy Riley, It's Real, the album title track was very much the sound of now. Despite the Swingbeat label, it still sounds pretty fresh. I like the comments from the producers.... (Teddy Riley & Gene Griffin, I guess?)
"Who we working with?"

"It's James man"

"Brown?"

"Nah man, James Ingram."
Yeah, New Jack Swing, some of it was damn good!

McKoy - On The Streets 1993

RighTrack Records CD TUM 7

Following the success of Fight and prior to the re-release of Family, this collaboration with James Taylor was released. Produced in conjunction with Mykaell Riley (Chinablack) it kept McKoy in the public eye. Chris Jones does a fair job of a commercial mix, as far as you can crossover with McKoy and still retain credibility, I guess. Noel's own mix, Soweto Meets Moss Side does a far better job with regard to bringing the best out of the song, in my opinion of course. The Mother Mix is really a dub. Mother (Jools Brettle & Lee Fisher) had some exposure on the dancefloors in 1993, with a tune called All Funked Up (Bosting Records) which worked quite well. This funky mix shows some of that enthusiasm and I can't help but wonder whether there was a full vocal Mother mix.

Noel Mckoy has proved a versatile artist, crossing various musical boundaries. Today, he owns his own label, RightTrack Records, and in 1998 released the album, Please Take This Personal. He has performed duets alongside Juliet Roberts, Mica Paris, Vanessa Simon and Beverley Knight. Today, Noel runs the Dutch Pot nightclub in London, where artists perform acoustic sets. These have included Omar, Lynden David Hall, Tashan and, of course, himself. He is currently working on new material.

Blackgirl - 90's Girl 1994

Kaper Records 74321-21789-2

BlackGirl consisted of Pam Copeland, Nycolia 'Tye-V' Turman and Rochelle Stuart from Atlanta. They formed in 1992 on the Kaper label and released their debut album, Treat U Right, in 1994. The single Krazy spent 15 weeks in the US Top 100, but it was its follow up that took BlackGirl into the Top 20. Produced by Teddy Riley the single 90's Girl spent 20 weeks in The Top 100 stalling at #13. The song was revamped for a Chrysler TV ad and as proof of their success, the group scored a tour with R Kelly.

Towards the end of 1994, BlackGirl earned two Billboard Music Award nominations for Top R&B Group, and Top R&B New Artist. In 1995, BlackGirl earned two Soul Train Award nominations, one for Single Of The Year for "Let's Do It Again" and Album Of The Year for Treat U Right. They then released 90's Girl in the UK, backed with Krazy and Ooh Yeah, where it reached #23 in the national chart. Their sophomore set, Evolution of BlackGirl, was finished but never released. In 1996 the group split, some of the members went on to work with the likes of Janet Jackson, Toni Braxton and Jermaine Jackson. After the break up Nycolia went on to write, or record back up vocals for Pink, Deborah Cox, Case, Toni Braxton and Will Smith.

Included in this rar is an extra Boss' Hip-Hop Extended Mix of Krazy which was taken from vinyl that I no longer have?

  • 90's Girl (Encore Extended Alternate Remix)
  • Krazy (Boss' Groove Mix)

Nayobe - I Love The Way You Love Me 1990

CBS Records XPR 1546

  • Nostalgic Mix
  • Nayobe's Love Dub
  • R & B Dance Mix
  • Teddy's Single Version
This was a Teddy Riley production that seemed to get overlooked, probably because it didn't meet the usual Swingbeat/New Jack criteria. I never really swung my pants to the flip side, it was all about the Nostalgic Mix for me. Written by Teddy & Tammy Lucas (I think?) it's a little reminiscent of Ce Ce Peniston's 'Finally' but it works on a similar level without being too cheesey.

The Chimes - True Love 1990

CBS Records CHIM T2

I heard a superb remix of Stronger Together and when this got released I thought I had found it. I was totally gutted to find that this is a Morales Dub Club groove that has very little in common with the original.

Then I played the True Love mixes and suddenly, the world was a nicer place. Two gorgeous mixes, both equally addictive but I think that the Extended Version is better listening whereas the Louie Louie Remix, having that baaad bass line, is better for the floor.
