Hi-Five - I Like The Way (The Kissing Game) - UK CDS - (1991)

JIVE CD 271

Hi-Five-I-Like-The-Way-The-Kissing-Game-Cover

Formed in Waco, Texas in 1989, Hi-Five consisted of the original founding members Tony Thompson, Roderick "Pooh" Clark, Marcus Sanders, Russell Neal, and Oaklahoma, native, Toriano Easley (who left the group shortly after release of the first single "Just Can't Handle It") and Hi-Five's management New York native Treston Irby, to complete the five remember, quintet teen group.

Now, the band, in various line-up changes would go on to suffer some really horrific tragedies which I really can't do justice to in a review of a CD Single. I'm so very sorry, boys!

Hi-Five-I-Like-The-Way-The-Kissing-Game-OFC

Also included is the New Jack Swing classic Just Can't Handle It, allegedly a true story from Mr Teddy Riley's history. You can look at this story two ways; a young man's sexual awakening at the hands of a sexy, experienced woman... or a minor being groomed and something where the police should be called.

I pick the former!

Also included is Sweetheart, which is a quite by-the-numbers affair, so just jump straight into track two and three.

Guy - Do Me Right - UK CDS - (1991)

MCA Records ‎– MCSTD 1551, Uptown Records ‎– MCSTD 1551

Guy-Do-Me-Right-OFC

A band that really needs no introduction around these parts, Guy are the combined talents of Teddy Riley alongside brothers Aaron and Damian Hall.

If you need to know anything about the boys then check out one of the other Guy posts.

Guy-Do-Me-Right-OBC

The version on the album was great, drafting in MCA/Uptown Records mainstay Heavy D, cousin of Pete Rock, he was a nice counterpoint to Aaron's always on point vocals. Here Teddy & Co switch it up a little with a new hook "Been thru heartaches and pain..." and some interesting changes to the percussion. Heavy D returns to the track also with a fresh verse for the new mixes.

All good.

Predictably, my favourite here is The Extended Club Version.

Rest in peace, Heav xxx

Guy - I Wanna Get With U - Europe CD Maxi - (1990)

MCA Records ‎– 9031-72997-2

Guy-I-Wanna-Get-With-U-Cover

Released the year before The Future album dropped, this gave an indication of how far Guy and Teddy Riley had come
as a Producer in such a short space of time. These boys were hungry, and they were taking no prisoners.

Sadly, a dark sequence of events including former manager Gene Griffin allegedly embezzling much of the group's earnings, an ill fated tour supporting New Edition where Guy upstaged the headline act a few dates into the tour, with deadly consequences that saw one of New Edition's production managers shoot and kill Anthony Bee - a member of Guy's security detail; saw both Aaron Hall step back from main vocal duties as well as Guy disbanding well before their time.

Guy-I-Wanna-Get-With-U-OFC

Guy-I-Wanna-Get-With-U-IFC

All that grim stuff aside, Guy put out some of the best R&B of the era, not least of which was the uber funky I Wanna Get With U, with Teddy taking on most of the vocal duties (but Aaron supplying an amazing bridge section and other background duties like the call and response with TR), it stands today as a great example of a band who, at the time, were top of the world.

And that bassline! Oh my days! :)

I'm not sure which is the best mix for me. The 12" or Club Version will both see you in good hands. Either way, this was one of my favourite tracks on the album.

Enjoy!

Guy - Her (Original Mixes) - UK CDS - (1991)

MCA Records ‎– MCSTD 1575

Guy-Her-OFC

Guy (this line-up comprising Teddy Riley and brothers Aaron Hall and Damian Hall) dropped an absolute monster in the shape of 1990's The Future, their second album. It was such a seminal drop that a good half of the 16 album tracks got single releases.

Sadly, it also marked the beginning of the end of the band; Aaron Hall was already in the process of leaving, with Teddy Riley taking over vocal duties for many of the tracks.

It didn't change the fact that what we got was a straight 10/10 album that had a lasting impact on the music scene.

Although Teddy would go on to score huge hits with the excellent Blackstreet, Guy will always have a special place in my heart.

Guy-Her-OBC

There was a CD of House mixes of this track. I have this and can post it if anyone is interested (and probably will do for sake of completion at some stage), but I thought these original versions are more suitable for this place. Hit me up in the comments.

You'll be wanting the Original Mix taken from the album rather than the Edit, but there isn't anything amazing/new in relation to Her on this release. Also included is the Canine Club 12" Version of D.O.G. Me Out, which is brilliant, even though I do prefer the other remix.

Troop/Levert Featuring Queen Latifah ‎– For The Love Of Money / Living For The City (Medley) - US Promo CD Singles

Giant Records ‎– PRO-CD-4822

Troop-Levert-For-The-Love-Of-Money-OFC

Kick the ballistics!

Keeping to our New Jack City theme and following on from the excellent Danny Madden - The Facts Of Life, we have another banger from the New Jack City soundtrack album, this time, two promo CD singles of Troop/Levert Featuring Queen Latifah ‎– For The Love Of Money / Living For The City (Medley).

Troop (an acronym for "Total Respect Of Other People") is an American R&B group from Pasadena, California. The group has had three number-one singles and ten top-ten singles on the Billboard R&B Singles chart, as well as five albums, which include three certified gold and one certified platinum album.

LeVert was an American R&B vocal group from Cleveland, Ohio, United States.[1] Formed in 1983, LeVert was composed of Sean and Gerald Levert (sons of Eddie Levert, founder and lead singer of R&B/Soul vocal group O'Jays) and Marc Gordon. Levert would go on to release seven albums betweem 1985 and 1997.

I'm really saddened to read that Gerald died of a heart attack due to an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in November 2006. And Sean Levert died in March 2008, while serving time in the Cuyahoga County Jail, for failing to pay child support.

Soul Vendor salutes you, boys. Thanks for allo the amazing music. Rest in peace xxx

You all know this track, it's dope, and New Jack City opens to it, with that fabulous overhead shot looking down on the city as we focus on Nino Brown dangling one of his victim's off a rooftop. It's later sang acapella when we get that shot of Troop singing by a burning trash can keeping warm in the harsh grip of Nino Brown's crack winter.

I'm sure the drums are sampled from Teddy Riley's remix of Jane Child's 'Don't Wanna Fall in Love', although can't be entirely sure.

As cool as these mixes are, I'm sure they'll only be of interest to mixologists for the various breakdowns. I think on balance I prefer the original album cut.

Mo' mixes here and I still think I just about prefer the original version on the album.

The Money Mix is quite different but lacks the original's punch to my ear, and not just because they've cut out Latifah's raps. The City Mix is essentially The Money Mix again but with Queen Latifah added back. The Cash Money Mix sounds the same again but is an extended/12" version.

Nino Brown's Mix is similar but different. It might be my pick of the mixes on this disc and yet I still prefer the other disc and the original album version above all else.

Still, they're worth having, if only to hear different takes on a classic.

Jodeci - Let's Go Through The Motions - (1993)

Uptown/MCA Records, UPTDM-54636

Jodeci-Let-s-Go-Through-The-Motions-Front-Cover

Jodeci were the heirs apparent to the New Jack throne vacated by the disbanding of Guy. A little tougher, perhaps. A little more street, definitely. A little more gospel tinged, too. They'd already enjoyed good success with their 1991 debut album, Forever My Lady, which more or less passed me by thanks to the awesomeness of Guy's The Future, released the same year, which stole all the limelight, as far as I was concerned... but that's another story (and another selection of posts).

However, forward on two years to '93 and Guy had gone their separate ways. Good timing then for Jodeci to drop their much harder, more "gangsta" 2nd album Diary Of A Mad Band, which (deservedly) blew up in a huge way. There were no filler tracks, save for Jodecidal Hotline, which was a skit anyway, and only three ballads, and then, a gradual slide into dirtier, and funkier territory with each track after that. It was a real tour de force.

Really though - this album was a straight banga.

Jodeci-Let-s-Go-Through-The-Motions-OBC

The album served as a launching platform for such greats as Timbaland (who was an understudy of Devante), Missy Elliott (heard rapping on two of the tracks) and Ginuwine - they were all members of DeVante's Swing Mob team at this point.

It was a huge hit... and what do you know? Before the year was out, from H-Town to Kreuz, every R&B band and their dog were sounding like Jodeci.

That same year, Jodeci contributed an upbeat party jam to the excellent Who's The Man soundtrack album (I've still never seen that film, but I always loved Ed Lover and Dr Dre on "Yo! MTV Raps") called Let's Go Through the Motions. It wasn't one of their bigger hits, but remains a club smasher. It was a new track, not culled from Diary..., although later editions of that album would include Let's Go Through The Motions, and their cover of the Stevie Wonder classic Lately as extra tracks. The track itself features funky fresh hip hop production feels and just bangs. Utterly essential.

I love this track, hope you do too.

Enjoy!

- Kymba :)

SWV - Anything (1994)

RCA/BMG, LC0316

SWV-Anything-Cover

Once upon a time, this wise lady (well, okay, not so wise, as it was me) said "we're all about the continuity here on The Soul Vendor", so, with that in mind, to follow on from Mickey's SWV Downtown post which mentions the excellent remix of Anything, I figured I'd post... the excellent remix of Anything.

The album mix of Anything on It's About Time never really did much for me; it was nice enough, just not as good as some of the other tracks, so I wasn't exactly that worried about it getting a single release... until I heard the remix, that is...

Draft in Allstar (Allen Gordon Jr) to provide a beefed up vibe for the track, with funky block-party style beats and a loop (and horns) sampled from disco-funk classic "Get Up and Dance" by Freedom, bring in Joe on backing vocals, and top it off with the biggest thing to happen to hiphop in the 90's (and, arguably, since), the Wu-Tang Clan (or at least members ODB, Meth & U-God) to drop a funky rhyme to round it out, and you have something seriously big on your hands.

SWV-Anything-OFC

This is a booty-shakin', hands in the air party jam of the highest order - and to think it was a slow-jam on the album.

The CD Single contains a slightly remixed album version (with a naughty sample of Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing drums laced underneath), and an instrumental of the album version, but it really is all about the Old Skool Mix, as mentioned above. It's a killer! There's also an Old Skool Party Mix, which is similar, but has various vocals and beats dropping in and out - almost in a dub style - it's not bad, and might be handy for mixing, but stick with track one for the full flava is the advice from yours truly.

Christopher Wiliams - Every Little thing U Do (1994)

Uptown Records ‎– UPTDM-54613

Christopher-Wiliams-Every-Little-thing-U-Do-OFC

Troy Christopher Williams (born August 22, 1967) is an American singer–songwriter and actor. Williams scored several R&B hit singles, notably "Talk to Myself" (1989), "I'm Dreamin'" (1991) and this release, "Every Little Thing U Do" (1993) during the New Jack Swing period. And this one is my favourite.

If you've seen New Jack City (if not, why not? It's a great film) then you'll recognize him as Kareem Ackbar, the banker dude in Nino Brown's cartel. He also supplied a great little track for the New Jack City soundtrack album in "I'm Dreamin'" which I believe got to number 1 in the US (Actually, that whole New Jack City album is a classic and deserving of a post in and of itself... but I'm digressing).

Christopher-Wiliams-Every-Little-thing-U-Do-OBC

The album version is a great mid tempo NJS banga and I love it but the Dawghouse Mix is my weapon of choice, borrowing some Hip Hop staples such as the oh so dope Gang Starr featuring Nice & Smooth DWYCK bassline (which in turn comes from Lawrence Wheeler & The Enforcers) as well as drums courtesy of Melvin Bliss's Synthetic Substitution - a break I waxed lyrical about loving on the Romeo And post I did recently.

Built on the rock solid foundations of the original It's better than any of the other tracks on the CD. Or maybe that's my predilection for 90s East Coast Hip Hop showing themselves??

Romeo And ‎– Romeo And You (1993)

Elektra Entertainment ‎– 9 61363-2, Elektra Entertainment ‎– 61363-2

Romeo-And-Romeo-And-You-cover

So I've been wanting to post up my 12" of For You (I'll Do Anything) for ages. It's a great little New Jack Swing stomper based around that ol' classic Synthetic Substitution by Melvin Bliss breakbeat, which I first became aware of thanks to the mighty Ultramagnetic MCs Ego Trippin' track. It's up there with the Skull Snaps It's A New Day and the Hot Pants break in my top three favourite breakbeats.

Romeo-And-Romeo-And-You-OFC-1

Romeo-And-Romeo-And-You-OFC-2

The track was really big for five minutes but sadly, despite the initial promise of For You and the release of this album and a second single, I'd never hear from Romeo And again.

Romeo-And-Romeo-And-You-OBC

Double sadly, with the loss of my turntable, I can't rip vinyl anymore, and this track was never released as a CDS so once again I'm flying in the face of my no albums rule.

What we are left with is a great song in For You, and a collection of bad to decent (but not stellar) ballads and NJS album tracks

It's worth having for this one track though.

My verdict? Listen to track 2 on loop.

Teddy Riley Featuring Tammy Lucas – Is It Good To You (1992) (UK & US CD Singles)

SOUL Records, MCA Records – MCSTD 1611
Teddy_Riley_Tammy_Lucas_Is_It_Good_To_You_Front

This is another pre-existing Soul Vendor post that I am updating with 320kbps rips goodness. I'm also making this a double post with both the UK
CD Single and the US promo releases. Don't say I'm never nice to you. ;)

Anyway...

The soundtrack album for seminal Hip-Hop movie Juice was overflowing with dope tracks from various artists like EPMD, Naughty By Nature, Big Daddy Kane and others. It really is up there with the greatest urban soundtrack albums. Leading the way in terms of single releases were Aaron Hall's superb Don't Be Afraid as posted previously, alongside this monstrous cut.

Is It Good To You is a reworking of a tune of the same name that TR produced for the late great Heavy D a year before. That song featured the bassline from Junior Giscombe's 'Mamma Used To Say', and, coupled with Heav's quality rhymes, made it a song of some note. Forward on a year and Teddy hooked up with long term collaborator, the honey voiced Tammy Lucas to rework the song into a fully fledged New Jack Swing masterpiece.

It's a real shame Tammy Lucas never blew up in her own right. I always loved her voice; she sounded damn near angelic, sung with real style, and stole the show whether guesting on the brilliant 1nce Again by A Tribe Called Quest, or Blackstreet's Tonight's The Night (both of which I will be adding to this site in the coming weeks). Frank/Windowlicker mentions in the older post's comments section reading an interview with her where she mentions that, as a plus sized woman, the record company didn't know how to market her, and so she went into writing rather than being an artist herself. What a superficial world we live in; hypocritical, too, with Heavy D's larger size being perfectly acceptable.

This release, then, is a nice reminder of a wonderful soul singer who never quite got her due.

There are six tracks on the UK single, most of them sound almost identical barring one or two slight differences in the arrangement, so I will let you judge which is the best. However, the Acapella might be of interest for you mixologists. For me, much like Aaron Hall's Don't Be Afraid, it's the album version featured on the Juice OST, conspicuous by its absence, which is best, so I've included it as a bonus track.

Teddy Riley Featuring Tammy Lucas – Is It Good To You (1992)

This is another one that should have been on here years ago!

The soundtrack album for seminal Hip-Hop movie Juice was overflowing with dope tracks from various artists like EPMD, Naughty By Nature, Big Daddy Kane and others. Check the Don't Be Afraid link for a little more info.

Jeff Redd - A Quiet Storm 1990

MCA Records MCAD-42299

Native New Yorker, Jeff Redd began singing with the short-lived group, The Sophisticated Gents, at the age of 17 in the mid-1980s. Redd got a deal with Uptown-MCA Records after Andre Harrell saw him perform as a solo artist. Uptown-MCA produced his 1990 debut album, A Quiet Storm. It includes some uptempo New Jack Swing songs I Found Lovin' and Come And Get Your Lovin' but this album is all about the far superior love ballads Love High and What Goes Around, Comes Around both of which charted with Love High reaching #16 on the charts. He also released a song entitled You Called And Told Me, from the Strictly Business soundtrack in 1991.

Redd played a large part in getting then-unknown singer Mary J Blige started in the music industry. While working in the assembly line at General Motors, Redd was given a tape from Mary J. Blige's step-father. The tape featured Blige performing Anita Baker's Rapture. Redd helped get her signed to Uptown and she toured with and worked as a background singer for him.

In 1993, Redd recorded a second album, Down Low. However, before the album could see release, EMI closed their entire black music department. As a result, only 1000 copies ever saw release and the album is very hard to find.

Jeff Redd then went on to work as an A&R exec at MCA Records. While at MCA, Redd worked with artists like Regina Belle and K-Ci & JoJo. When MCA closed their doors in 2003, Redd started up his own independent label, Sol Real Records, LLC.

With the label, Redd currently works with artists like Akili, Blaq Rose and Forever. In 2007, Redd released an album entitled Jeff Redd Presents : The Essence Of Soul which features tracks from each of these artists. Jeff Redd has an album in the works to be released in 2008.

Pennye Ford - Dangerous 1985

Total Experience Records FT 49976

Penny (with or without an 'e') Ford's musical roots run deep, daughter of record exec. Gene Redd Sr. (King Records) and singer Carolyn Ford and sister of Sharon Redd ('Beat the Street'), She was exposed to a lot of music as a result of Dad's work with James Brown and Kool & the Gang. She got into music at five years old, when she started piano lessons and she eventually became an in-demand session vocalist. Ford can rightfully make claim to being "Ms. New Jill" before there was New Jack Swing. She signed with Total Experience Records, home of the Gap Band and can be heard on their hit single I Found My Baby. The New Jack sound owes a lot to the artists of Total Experience.

Ford debuted as a recording artist in her own right on the 1984 album Pennye, which yielded two R&B charters, Change Your Wicked Ways and the slammin' Dangerous (this 12" is a must for dance fans). With production by Jonah Ellis, Oliver Scott, Jimmy Hamilton and Maurice Hayes (Have Myself a Good Time), and Yarborough & Peoples (Don't Stop the Music) Pennye was loaded with sassy soulfulness and is a good precursor of the new jack sound. Remix duty is carried out by Lonnie Simmons, the legendary Total Experience producer that made the Gap Band a success.

Asia Blue - Connect 1992

Atomic Records ABDJ 1

This is the song that actually got me interested in Asia Blue. Note that it's a Promo 12", no cover i.e. no pretty girls to distract me from the music. No sir, this was recommended by Steve Hobbs in Blues & Soul mag and it joined my very long 'Wanted' list. Although all Asia Blue's songs are OK, none of them were particularly special. Boy In The Moon was all about D-Influence and Escaping was bought on the strength of the other two singles. Connect is more than that, Connect is special.

The 3 Amigoz Mix is as far as you need to go, IMO. It's an infectious piece of street soul that has the x factor (and I don't mean the bloody tv program) that makes you want to move. The other mixes are a little less effective and the 4 2 The Floor house mix should be treated with the contempt it deserves. A pointless attempt at making the song fit where it shouldn't.
