Pebbles - Girlfriend (1987) US Promo CD Single

MCA Records – DMCA 1233

This one's a bit of an exclusive. I was going to rip and post my 12" single of Girlfriend, but I have something much, much better. A few years back I was sent a copy of the original promo CD for Girlfriend. Unlike my 12", this contained all the mixes of the track, in crystal clear CD quality, and is much nicer.

Perri Alette McKissack, now Perri Reid after marrying R&B uber-producer LA Reid, was raised in Oakland, California. Nicknamed “Pebbles” as a toddler (after the Flintstones character, whom she somewhat resembled), Pebbles is also the cousin of R&B singer Cherrelle (remember Saturday Love with Alexander O'Neil?).
Pebbles began her career as a backup singer and song writer for groups like Con Funk Shun and Sister Sledge. In 1988 the singer’s self-titled Platinum selling debut album on MCA produced the #1 hit “Mercedes Boy” (for the Corey Haim movie License to Drive), which I will post soon here on SoulVendor, and this release, as well as a couple of others. Two years later in 1990, her second album Always went Gold. The album had more of a New Jack Swing edge and brought the US top ten hits “Giving You the Benefit”, and “Backyard” featuring Salt-N-Pepa.

She married uber-producer and LaFace Records co-founder Antonio Reid in 1990, and put aside her solo career to found her own production company, Pebbitone, in 1991, signing & overseeing the Grammy Award winning girl group TLC. Although the group initially saw Pebbles as a maternal figure, the lack of financial success in contrast to their meteoric rise in popularity would drive a wedge between manager and group. The ensuing backlash for their management was the cause of TLC’s bankruptcy filing in 1994 (to release themselves from the contract), as well as the demise of Pebbles’ marriage.

So, to this track itself. It's a typical LA Reid/Babyface production, and has a similar sound to Bobby Brown's Don't Be Cruel, which has the same production team and uses the same instruments - compare the drum sounds between both tracks to see what I mean. It sounded like a breath of fresh air back then, and has aged pretty damn well. The various tracks are all variations on a theme, and there's not a lot to choose between them.

Anyway, here's Girlfriend - High quality rips, as usual, and high quality artwork scans included in the .ZIP file. Mercedes Boy to follow.
